Up until 2020, Marcus Damon kept a relatively low profile after his debut EP in 2016. But in the last year or so, he’s released standout singles on Housupa, leaked a slew of groove-laden refixes, and dropped his ‘True Sounds of House’ EP on his own imprint, collaborating with London’s cult
Afrohouse hero, Antony Ranz.

Behind Marcus Damon’s apparently sudden re-emergence lies more than ten years of selecting R&B, jazz and house music on London’s underground DJ circuits. His speciality was blending ‘90s hip hop
and throwback R&B with upbeat and contemporary house and garage. And it’s this that underpins the Spears of Fire release: intricately rhythmic, hip-winding basslines sway back and forth with soulful melodic energies.

Spears of Fire is the uplifting A-side, bouncing a South African-styled log drum bassline through a cleverly woven backdrop of stabs and atmospheres. Lion Hills is the brooding B-side, turning up the heat on the subs, rolling out the shakers and snare fills, and holding up dancefloor tension through its sparse synth-horn section.
